Tricia Jordan, founder of Maldiva Aesthetics, in her Newport clinic
The story

From evenings and weekends to a clinic of her own

Tricia opened Maldiva Aesthetics in 2019. Before that, she trained in aesthetics on evenings and weekends, fitting it around work and two young boys. Coming back from maternity leave, she decided it was now or never.

“Life is too short, really, to live with what ifs.”

Tricia Jordan, in the Sage film

Newport’s aesthetics scene was already well established when she started, and putting herself out there was, in her words, “really, really nerve-racking”. Instead of competing on marketing, she relied on people. Friends, family and neighbouring businesses sent her first clients, and word of mouth did the rest.

The honesty that won those clients hasn’t changed. “If someone isn’t suitable for a treatment, I’ll tell them,” she told Sage.

A community clinic on Constance Street

In the film, Tricia calls Newport “a city that’s thriving”, and for her the community is what makes it. The clinic’s neighbours include a hair salon and a dog groomer, and as she told Sage, “we’re always in and out of each other’s shops!”

The family’s ties to Newport County AFC go back to the club’s Soccer Tots sessions. Years of matchdays and birthday mascot days later, Tricia describes “a really great relationship with the club”.

What clients come to Tricia for

Most of what happens on Constance Street is facial rejuvenation. Every treatment starts with a consultation, and Tricia carries out each one herself.

0:04 Tricia: Life is too short really to live with what ifs. I’m a very determined person, and everything I set my mind to, I do achieve it. A psychic actually told me this years ago, that I was born to actually, you know, run my own business, and it was going to be successful. So I’m really glad that I did it.

0:18 My background is dental. One of our dentists was telling me all about the aesthetics industry that they had just joined, and I always wanted to do it. And I thought, you know what, now is the time. It’s now or never, basically.

0:30 Life was hectic. I’ve got two young boys and I was going back from maternity leave, and I thought it would be so nice to work for myself. And I’d wanted to do it for so long, and it’s the best thing I ever did.

0:41 We’re in Wales. We’re in between Bristol and Cardiff. Newport is actually a city that’s thriving. When I started my aesthetics journey, there was only three of us in the area, and they were already really established. So it was really, really nerve-racking putting myself out there.

0:56 Got 1,300 clients on my books that recommend me to friends, keep coming back. It’s unbelievable, really.

1:04 Client: You can tell she’s really passionate about making people feel good. I think that goes like a really long way, especially like for women. I feel there’s quite a lot of pressure on us to look a certain way, especially as we get older, and I always leave here feeling much more confident in myself.

1:16 Tricia: When my 14-year-old was small, he went to Newport County Soccer Tots. It was like a little football club for the kids. That’s how we got involved with Newport County. There’s a great community spirit here.

1:29 We bought the hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber. It was for my uncle, first of all. He had stage four cancer. I was only offering it here for him, basically. We realised the benefits of it with athletes and footballers. We’ve got a really great relationship with the club. The boys have been mascot for their birthday every year, so we’ve got to know some of the players, messaging them, “Do you want to come in and have some free sessions, so we can promote it?” And it’s just gone from strength to strength. I had no idea that it was going to grow as big as it has.

1:59 I’m not great at admin. At the end of every accounting period, I always say, “Oh, I’m going to be more on it next year, and make sure every month I’m going to be doing my figures.” And I still didn’t, and ended up in a bit of a mess. If I would have had the Sage accounting system then, I wouldn’t have got into that mess that I was in. I don’t want to be using that time I got with my kids to be sat there for three days at the end of the accounting period, putting all my figures in.

2:24 I’ve actually outgrown this space. I’ve only been here a year. Me and my husband have been looking at premises for us both to be together, where we can rent other spaces out to other businesses to help them grow.

2:35 The dream was to always have the sign with the business name on, and now I’ve got it, I am just over the moon. I’m thrilled. I just can’t even put it into words.
